THURSDAY
Thu 30th Oct : Il Decameron (18)
Il Decameron is Pier Paolo Pasolini's elegant literary adaptation of Bocaccio's masterwork which he grouped together under the title of the "Trilogy of Life" and which he would originally characterise as his most "non-political" film. The second and third instalments (The Canterbury Tales and Arabian Nights) will follow on the 1st and 2nd Nov. [ find out more ]
FRIDAY (HALLOWEEN)
Fri 31st Oct : Salo (18)
Pasolini began this film during a period of enormous artistic crisis. Filled with “disappointment in man and God” (as one friend of his described it), he began to think that all his earlier work was bogus and compromised, merely another length of the feed-tube through which consumerist repression is shoved down our throats. His response was to make what he called an “indigestible” film based on the Marquis de Sade’s 120 Days of Sodom, with a smidgen of Dante’s Inferno thrown in. [ find out more ]
SATURDAY
Sat 1st Nov : The Notorious Bettie Page (18)
In her first outing since 2000’s controversial American Psycho, writer-director Mary (I Shot Andy Warhol) Harron, presents this dramatised look at the life of Bettie Page, America’s most popular nude pinup girl in the 1950s, one of the first sex icons in America and the target of a senate investigation. Sat 1st Nov : Canterbury Tales (15)
The Canterbury Tales forms the second film in Pasolini’s Trilogy of Life. This sexually explicit retelling of Geoffrey Chaucer’s famous tales take the narrative into a realm of wild expression and beyond as they chronicle the 14th-century's social, sexual, and religious standards in England. SUNDAY
Sun 2nd Nov : Kinsey (15)
Liam Neeson stars as Alfred Kinsey, who in 1948 irrevocably changed American culture with his book, Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male. Interviewing thousands of people about the most intimate aspects of their sex lives, Kinsey lifted the weight of secrecy and shame from a society in which sexual practices were mostly hidden. Sun 2nd Nov : Arabian Nights (18)
This lush anthology of erotic tales was filmed in four countries (Iran, Nepal, Yemen, and Eritrea) over a period of more than two years. Completing the Pasolini’s Trilogy of life Arabian Nights is, perhaps, the most controversial of the lot, engendering reactions from admiration to dismissal. [ find out more ]
